ROCKROOSTER AK232 SNOW FORT: An 8-Inch Winter Work Boot
Cold-weather work boots fail in two ways: the insulation is too thin to hold heat through a shift, or the sole hardens at low temperature and loses grip exactly when the ground is at its most dangerous. The AK232 SNOW FORT addresses both, and it is specified for sites where winter is a working condition rather than an inconvenience.
What the boot is
An 8-inch safety boot in wheat nubuck leather, insulated with 400 g Thinsulate and lined with a faux-fur collar. The toe cap is composite, the outsole is rubber with HRO contact-heat resistance, and the boot is certified to the Australian standard adopted from ISO 20345.
Thermal performance
400 g Thinsulate is the fill weight used in serious winter footwear; lighter 200 g fills suit cool conditions, while 400 g is intended for sustained sub-zero exposure. A plush faux-fur collar lining covers the shaft, which reduces heat loss at the point where cold air enters a boot.
Two clarifications matter for buyers. First, the insulation keeps heat in but does not generate it — a boot worn with a thin cotton sock in −20 °C will still feel cold. Pair it with a wool or technical sock, and do not pack the boot so tightly that circulation is restricted. Second, ROCKROOSTER does not publish a single temperature rating for this model, because real-world performance depends on activity level and sock choice; treat any single-number rating with caution.
The upper is water-repellent treated nubuck. That finish sheds snow and slush, but the boot does not carry a certified water-penetration marking — it is not intended for standing water or extended slush work.
Safety certification
The AK232 SNOW FORT carries AS 2210.3:2019 Class I SB HRO SRC FO, certified through CMI (certificate PC10225). Decoding the marking:
- Class I — footwear made from leather and other materials, as opposed to all-rubber or all-polymeric footwear.
- SB — basic safety footwear, which includes the 200 J toe-cap impact requirement.
- HRO — outsole resistance to contact heat.
- SRC — the highest slip-resistance marking, tested on both ceramic tile and steel floor.
- FO — resistance of the outsole to fuel oil.
The composite toe cap is specified at 200 J impact and 15 kN compression. Composite is the sensible choice in winter footwear: it does not conduct cold into the toe box the way steel does, and it does not set off metal detectors on site.
Outsole behaviour
The rubber outsole is HRO-rated for contact heat at 300 °C for one minute, and the compound is filled for low-temperature flexibility. A chemical-resistant rubber toe bumper protects the toe area when working on rough ground or against kerbs.
Tread depth is the relevant metric for snow, and deep lugs clear packed snow rather than filling. On ice, no lug pattern substitutes for traction devices; the boot is a working platform, not a substitute for crampons.
Fit and sizing
The boot is offered in an extra-wide (EEE) fit. Winter footwear needs room for a thicker sock, and a boot that fits snugly in summer will be too tight with a wool sock in January. Size for the sock you will actually wear, and confirm with the size chart.
The heel zone uses a soft-rubber counter lining to reduce chafing during long shifts, which is the usual failure point when a boot is worn with a heavy sock.
Supplied with socks
Each pair ships with ROCKROOSTER winter socks made with COOLMAX® fibres. Moisture management inside a winter boot is counter-intuitive but essential: wet insulation loses most of its insulating value, so a sock that moves sweat away from the skin keeps the fill dry and working.

Where it fits in a range
For cold and dry conditions, the SNOW FORT is the winter option in the ROCKROOSTER range. For wet but not cold work, the AK669 Woodland uses a HydroGuard membrane and carries EH protection. For hot surfaces and asphalt, the AK232 is the 7-inch HRO-rated alternative.
Availability
The AK232 SNOW FORT is available for wholesale distribution in full size runs, with certification documents and winter-sock pairing available on request. Contact our sales team for seasonal lead times and MOQs.
