ROCKROOSTER AK232 Asphalt Work Boot: Steel Toe for Hot Surfaces
Paving crews and plant maintenance teams work on two hazards at once: surfaces hot enough to soften an ordinary rubber sole, and ground that is alternately wet and oily. The AK232 is built for that combination — a steel toe, a heat-rated outsole and a water-resistant leather upper, certified to Class I S2 HRO SRC.

Decoding S2 HRO SRC
Three markings carry most of the specification value here.
S2 builds on S1, which already covers antistatic behaviour, heel energy absorption, fuel-oil resistance of the outsole and the closed seat region. S2 adds resistance to water penetration and water absorption of the upper. In practical terms, the leather is tested against water ingress rather than simply treated with a surface finish — which is why the AK232 can be specified for wet asphalt, though not for standing water.
HRO is outsole resistance to contact heat. This is the marking that separates the AK232 from general-purpose work boots: a PU/TPU outsole will soften and deform on hot asphalt, while an HRO-rated compound holds its shape and grip.
SRC is the highest slip rating in EN ISO 20345 and AS 2210.3, tested on both ceramic tile with sodium lauryl sulphate and steel floor with glycerol.
The steel toe meets ASTM F2413-18 I/75 C/75 SD — 75 ft-lb impact, 2,500 lb compression, static dissipative. ROCKROOSTER lists this as a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity rather than third-party certification; the listed third-party approval is the AS 2210.3 certification through CMI.
Where the boot performs
Paving and road maintenance. Heat is the defining hazard, and the HRO outsole is the reason to choose this model over a lighter PU boot.
Asphalt plants and foundries. The 7-inch shaft gives ankle coverage without the weight of an 8-inch boot.
Plant maintenance and general industry. The water-resistant leather and SRC outsole handle washdown areas and oily floors.
Comfort and construction
The footbed is PORON cushioning with Microban antimicrobial protection, removable and replaceable. The CoolMAX mesh lining manages moisture — relevant on hot surfaces, where the foot sweats more and a damp lining accelerates fatigue.
The wide last gives toe room, and the leather is thick enough to hold its shape at the vamp. Break-in is short: expect a few shifts rather than a few weeks.
Where the boot does not fit
Standing water. S2 covers water penetration resistance of the upper, not immersion. For washdown bays and slurry, specify a membrane boot such as the AK669 Woodland.
Puncture hazards. The AK232 does not carry a puncture-resistant midsole plate. Sites with exposed rebar or sharp debris need a PR-rated boot.
Extreme cold. This is an uninsulated boot. For sub-zero work, the AK232 SNOW FORT uses 400 g Thinsulate and a composite toe.
Electrical hazard work. The AK232 carries an SD marking, not EH. Static-dissipative footwear is conductive by design and is not a substitute for electrical hazard protection.
Care
Hot environments dry leather out faster than temperate ones. Condition the upper every four to six weeks during summer, and inspect the outsole for heat glazing — a shiny, hardened surface is the first sign that grip is going. Keep the boot away from direct heat when drying; a boot that has been on hot asphalt all day should be aired at ambient temperature, not placed near a heater.
